Arthur Ashkin is an American physicist born on September 2, 1922, in New York to a Jewish family. He worked at Bell Laboratories and Lucent. On October 3, 2018, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics alongside Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland for his research in optical tweezers and their application to biological systems using laser beams, which allow for the detection and manipulation of viruses, bacteria, and other cells without damage. He became the oldest person to win a Nobel Prize following this achievement.
