Artashes Karamyan was an Armenian physiologist born on March 2, 1908, in Kapan, within the Zangezur district of the Elizavetpol province in the Russian Empire. He became a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1970 and of the Armenian Academy of Sciences in 1963. A student of Leon Orbeli, Karamyan was a member of the Communist Party since 1940. He passed away on November 20, 1989, in Leningrad, Russian SFSR, USSR.
