Bethel is also the president of the Society of Maritime Industries and holds the positions of vice-president and treasurer at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in Great Britain. Additionally, he is a lay member of the Court of the University of Strathclyde. Previously, he was the president of Scottish Engineering and the CEO of the Lanarkshire Development Agency.
