Antonio Tovar Llorente was a Spanish philologist, linguist, and historian born in Valladolid on May 17, 1911, and died in Madrid on December 13, 1985. He was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. Tovar spent his childhood in the Basque Country and Valencia, where he learned Basque and Catalan. Initially involved in politics during the Spanish Civil War, he later distanced himself from the Franco regime, became a professor and later rector at the University of Salamanca, and expressed solidarity with persecuted colleagues, even facing exile for his beliefs.
