Anton Aurre Elorrieta was a Basque merchant navy captain and politician born on September 24, 1927, in Ajangiz, Biscay. He served in the merchant navy for 25 years, later becoming personnel director at Flota Naviera Vizcaína for two decades. Involved in the PNV and Basque folklore, he joined the General Councils post-Franco and was elected for 16 years, serving as president from 1983 to 1995. After a stroke in 1999, he became the honorary president of the Sabino Arana Foundation. He was multilingual, fluent in Basque, Spanish, English, and French.
