He studied at Oxford and University College Hospital, qualifying in 1949. His career included working as a General Practitioner, directing the University of Sussex Health service, and serving as a Consultant Psychotherapist at St. Thomas' Hospital. He recognized the psychological distress in patients and developed a time-limited therapy used in the NHS. Ryle lived in East Sussex with his family and passed away on 29 September 2016, survived by his second wife and children.
