Sefton was a pioneering figure at the University of Sydney, being the first woman elected as President of the Medical Society. In recognition of her outstanding services, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2000 and later served as Pro-Chancellor and Deputy Chancellor at the University of Sydney.
