His brother Sanjay is also an actor, while his brother Boney is a film producer. Kapoor received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1984 for 'Mashaal'. He won the Best Actor award in 1988 for 'Tezaab' and subsequently for 'Beta' in 1989. He ventured into Hollywood with 'Slumdog Millionaire' in 2008 and appeared in the American series '24' in 2010.
