Anatoly Rybakov (1911–1998) was a Russian writer born into a Jewish family in Derjanovka. He studied at the Moscow Institute of Transport Engineers but was expelled and exiled due to his affiliation with the Komsomol. Rybakov served in various battlefronts during World War II, participating in the capture of Berlin. He began his literary career in 1947, creating adventure stories for youth and writing notable works including his first novel 'Drivers' (1950). His works, translated into 52 languages, have sold over 20 million copies and many adapted for screen. He died in New York.
