Anatoly Karpov, born on May 23, 1951, is a Russian chess player and grandmaster who was the World Champion from 1975 to 1985, until he was defeated by Garry Kasparov. He contested the title against Kasparov three times between 1986 and 1990 and became champion again after Kasparov left FIDE in 1993. Karpov held the championship until 1999 when he retired in protest of the new championship rules by FIDE. He has won over 160 tournaments, achieved his highest rating of 2780, and was the world's number 1 for 102 months since FIDE's ranking began in 1970.
