Amaia Aranzabal is a Basque mountaineer born on December 8, 1963, in Bergara, Guipúscoa. She became the first Basque woman in history to summit an eight-thousander, achieving this feat at Cho Oyu (8,201 m) on September 16, 1992, alongside fellow mountaineer Josu Bereziartua. That same year, she also participated in an expedition to Everest. Her early climbing experiences involved the 'Pol-pol' group in her hometown, before joining 'Lagun onak' in Azpeitia and extending her climbing repertoire across the Pyrenees and Alps, culminating in trips to the Himalayas.
