She grew up in California and was recruited by the UCLA Bruins to play collegiate tennis before turning professional in 1990. May was primarily a doubles player, achieving a top ranking of 58 in the world and winning one WTA title in 1990. She has family ties to the tennis world through her sister Kathy May and nephew Taylor Fritz. Additionally, she competed in the main draw of all four Grand Slam tournaments.
