Alton A. Lindsey (1907-1999) was a pioneering ecologist and professor at Purdue University known for establishing nature preserves in Indiana. His influential book, 'Natural Areas of Indiana and Their Preservation,' aided the formation of Pine Hills Nature Preserve and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. An active conservationist, he played a key role in preventing the damming of Big Walnut Creek. Lindsey participated in Admiral Byrd's second Antarctica expedition and published numerous books and scientific articles. He was a founding member of The Nature Conservancy and received many honors, including 'Eminent Ecologist of 1976.'
