Ali Gharbi was a Tunisian swimmer born on April 18, 1955, in Carthage, Tunisia, during the French protectorate. He competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics and was considered the best Arab and African swimmer until the rise of Oussama Mellouli. In 1977, he joined his teammate Mariem Mezghani at Esperance de Tunis, where they won numerous titles together. Gharbi passed away at the age of 54 on December 12, 2009, in Tunis, Tunisia, after a long battle with illness.
