Alfredo Ormando was an Italian theologian and author born on December 15, 1958, in Messina. He became a symbol of protest against the Roman Catholic Church's stance on homosexuality after he self-immolated on January 13, 1998, in St. Peter's Square. Following the incident, Ormando was hospitalized but succumbed to his injuries days later. His suicide note expressed his struggles with his identity and society's rejection. In 2002, he was proposed for canonization by the Italian gay organization Dionysos Arcigay, and in 2005, the American activist group Soulforce held a vigil at St. Peter's Square.
