Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998) was a Soviet and German composer known for his significant contribution to contemporary music. His early works were notably influenced by Dmitri Shostakovich. Schnittke developed a polystylistic technique, evident in his epic Symphony No. 1 (1969–1972) and his first concerto grosso (1977). Gaining international recognition in the 1980s, his major works included the second (1980) and third (1983) string quartets, the String Trio (1985), and several symphonies and concertos. As his health declined, his music shifted towards a more introspective and somber style.
