Alexander Prokhorov was a Russian physicist awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1964 for his pioneering work in the development of lasers and masers. He shared this honor with Russian scientist Nikolai Basov and American scientist Charles Townes. Born on July 11, 1916, in Queensland, USA, he returned to the Soviet Union in 1923. Prokhorov served in the Russian military and later became a professor at Moscow University. He was a member of several prestigious academies, including the Soviet Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He passed away in Moscow on January 8, 2002.
