He served as a battery commander in the 661st Artillery Regiment of the 206th Rifle Division, part of the 47th Army on the Voronezh Front, holding the rank of Senior Lieutenant. Kotov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1944 for his bravery and leadership in combat.
