Aleksandar Vesic was a Yugoslav-American geotechnical engineer known for his contributions to the theory of pile load capacity in elastic ground, load transfer from pavements to the underlying soil, seabed soil behavior, and excavation physics. After earning a doctorate in civil engineering at the University of Belgrade, he moved to the U.S. in 1956. He served as a professor and Dean of the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University, and chaired the Deep Foundations Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
