Albert Marteau was a French military officer, resistance fighter, and civil servant, born on May 23, 1911, in Verrines-sous-Celles. A skilled non-commissioned officer at the outbreak of World War II, he joined Free France in 1940. He fought in Africa and the Near East, but his plane was shot down over Crete in 1941, leading to his imprisonment for the remainder of the war in Nazi camps. He was recognized as a Companion of the Liberation for his contributions.
