Albert Frank Shields was an American engineer born on June 26, 1908, in Ohio. He graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology, and in 1933, he went to Berlin for his doctorate at the Prussian Testing Institute for Waterways and Shipbuilding. There, he developed the Shields parameter, which helps to determine flow conditions leading to sediment transport. After returning to the USA, he struggled to find work in his field and later worked at a paper machinery company in Brooklyn, where he acquired several patents. He lived in Forest Hills, New York, around 1968 to 1971.
