In 1968, he joined Paul Lytton's quartet, and two years later formed his own trio. Wakeman collaborated with various musicians including Graham Collier, Johnny Dankworth, David Essex, and Mike Westbrook. He was part of the group Gilgamesh, but left before their debut album. In 1976, he briefly joined Soft Machine and contributed to their album 'Softs'.
