Alan J. Heeger is an American chemist and physicist born in Iowa on January 22, 1936, into a Jewish family. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1957 and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1961. He is currently teaching at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Heeger was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2000, sharing it with Alan MacDiarmid and Hideki Shirakawa. He is also a member of the USA Science and Engineering Festival.
