Al Hoagland was a pioneering figure in the development of hard disk drives, notably contributing to the IBM RAMAC. He worked at IBM from 1956 until 1984 and later directed the Institute for Information Storage Technology at Santa Clara University until 2005. He authored the first book on Digital Magnetic Recording and was instrumental in preserving the IBM RAMAC, which is exhibited at the Computer History Museum. Hoagland passed away on October 1, 2022, in Portland, Oregon.
