Åke Gunnar Hörnell, born August 15, 1948, is a Swedish engineer and inventor. He studied electrical engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, graduating in 1972. Hörnell researched LCD technology, leading to the 1976 invention of the Speedglas welding helmet which automatically darkens during use. After ESAB showed no interest in developing the product, he founded Hörnell Elektrooptik in 1980 in Dalarna, producing liquid crystal welding helmets, the biggest employer in Gagnef, later acquired by 3M. He holds several patents involving liquid crystals.
