He served as the mayor of Naperville, Illinois, being first elected in 1995 and re-elected multiple times until 2011, making him the longest-serving mayor of the city. In 2015, he chose not to run for re-election and did not endorse any candidate, leading to the election of Steve Chirico, a former city council member, who was sworn in on May 3, 2015.
