The town has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Santa Claus was founded in 1854 and was originally named Santa Fe. The town was renamed in 1856 after the postmaster, James Martin, received a letter addressed to "Santa Claus, Indiana."
