Decatur, Illinois, is a city located in the central part of the state, approximately 30 miles east of Springfield, the state capital. With a population of around 70,000, Decatur is the sixth-largest city in Illinois. The city has a humid continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. Decatur was founded in 1829 and was named after Stephen Decatur, a naval hero of the War of 1812. The city's economy is based on manufacturing, healthcare, and education. Decatur is also home to Millikin University, a private liberal arts college.
