The town experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Mount Vernon was established in 1810 and named after George Washington's estate. It played a role in the Civil War as a stop on the Macon and Brunswick Railroad. The town has a rich agricultural heritage, with farming and livestock production being important industries.
