The lake is fed by the Peace River and is part of the Peace River watershed. The climate in the area is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average temperature in January is 54 °F (12 °C), and the average temperature in July is 84 °F (29 °C). The lake was named after Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. The area around the lake has been inhabited by humans for thousands of years, and there are several archaeological sites in the area.
