Kairouan, also known as Al Qayrawan, is a city in Tunisia located in the central-eastern part of the country, about 150 kilometers south of Tunis. The city has a hot semi-arid climate, with average temperatures ranging from 10°C in January to 30°C in July. Kairouan was founded in 670 AD by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi and was the capital of the Aghlabid dynasty from 800 to 909 AD. The city is home to the Great Mosque of Kairouan, which is one of the oldest and most important mosques in North Africa.
