It is situated on the Syr Darya River and has a subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Khujand has a rich history dating back to the 7th century BC and was once a major center on the Silk Road. The city is home to several historical and architectural landmarks, including the 10th-century Khujand Fortress and the 16th-century Sheikh Muslihiddin Mausoleum.
