Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, is situated in the Hissar Valley, at an elevation of 800 meters. The city experiences a humid continental climate, with hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. Dushanbe was founded in the 7th century and served as a trading post on the Silk Road. In the 16th century, it became the capital of the Bukhara Emirate. In 1929, the city was renamed Stalinabad and became the capital of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic. After Tajikistan's independence in 1991, the city was renamed Dushanbe.
