Usulután is a city in El Salvador, the capital of Usulután Department. The city has a tropical climate with an average temperature of 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit). Usulután was founded in 1575 by Spanish conquistadors and was originally called Villa de San Miguel de la Frontera. The city played an important role in the indigo trade during the colonial period and was a major center of coffee production in the 19th century. Usulután is home to several historical landmarks, including the Church of Santa Catarina, which was built in the 17th century. The city is also known for its traditional crafts, including pottery, weaving, and woodworking.
