Kirsanov is a town in Tambov Oblast, Russia, located on the Vorona River, 94 kilometers (58 mi) southwest of Tambov. The town has a population of 17,224 (2010 Census). The climate is humid continental, with cold winters and warm summers. Kirsanov was founded in 1704 as a fortress to protect the southern border of Russia from the Crimean Tatars. The town grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming a major center of trade and industry. Kirsanov is home to a number of historical and cultural landmarks, including the Kirsanov Museum of Local Lore, the Kirsanov Drama Theater, and the Kirsanov Art Gallery.
