Mochalishche is a rural locality (a selo) in Mari-Tureksky District of the Mari El Republic, Russia, located on the left bank of the Nolyutka River, 21 kilometers (13 mi) southwest of Mari-Turek, the administrative center of the district, and 90 kilometers (56 mi) west of Yoshkar-Ola, the capital of the republic. It has a humid continental climate, with average temperatures ranging from -12.9 °C (8.8 °F) in January to 18.5 °C (65.3 °F) in July. The village was first mentioned in 1746, and its name is derived from the Mari word "mochal" meaning "moss". Mochalishche is home to a number of historical and cultural sites, including the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, built in 1802, and the Mochalishche Museum of Local Lore, which houses exhibits on the history and culture of the village and the surrounding area.
