Polyarnyy, formerly known as Aleksandrovsk, is a closed town in Murmansk Oblast, Russia, located on the Kola Peninsula at the head of the Kola Bay, just north of the Arctic Circle. With a population of around 17,000, it is a major naval base and shipbuilding center. The climate is subarctic, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The town was founded in 1896 as a naval base and port, and it played a significant role in the Russian Civil War and World War II.
