Polyarnyy, formerly known as Aleksandrovsk, is a closed town in Murmansk Oblast, Russia, located on the Kola Peninsula at the head of the Kola Bay, just north of the Arctic Circle. With a population of around 17,000, it is a major naval base and shipbuilding center. The climate is subarctic, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The town was founded in 1896 as a naval base and port, and it played a significant role in the Russian Civil War and World War II. It is home to several historical landmarks, including the Church of the Savior on the Waters, which was built in 1915.
