The city has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Tosno was first mentioned in chronicles in 1500 and was granted town status in 1963. It is home to the Tosno Orthodox Church, built in 1820, and the Tosno Museum of Local Lore, which exhibits artifacts from the city's history.
