Kalibo, officially the Municipality of Kalibo (Aklanon: Banwa it Kalibo; Hiligaynon: Banwa sang Kalibo; Tagalog: Bayan ng Kalibo), is a 1st class municipality and capital of the province of Aklan, Philippines. Located on the northwestern tip of Panay Island, Kalibo is known for the Ati-Atihan Festival, a celebration in honor of the Santo Niño held annually in January. Its weather is characterized by two distinct seasons: dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year. Kalibo's history dates back to the pre-colonial era when it was a thriving settlement of the Ati people. The name "Kalibo" is believed to have originated from the Aklanon word "sangka libo," meaning "one thousand," referring to the number of Ati who attended the first Catholic mass held in the area. During the Spanish colonial period, Kalibo became a significant center for trade and commerce.
