Pátzcuaro, also known as Packuaro, is a city in the Mexican state of Michoacán, located at an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level and is part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The city has a subtropical highland climate, with warm, humid summers and cool, dry winters. Pátzcuaro was founded by the Purépecha people in the 14th century and was an important center of their Tarascan Empire. The city's historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is known for its well-preserved colonial architecture, its traditional crafts, and its Day of the Dead celebrations.
