Puerto Vallarta has a rich history and heritage, dating back to the pre-Columbian era when it was inhabited by indigenous tribes. The city was founded in 1851 by Guadalupe Sánchez Torres and was named after Ignacio Vallarta, the governor of Jalisco at the time.
