The town experiences a cold desert climate with hot summers and cold winters, with average temperatures ranging from -20°C (-4°F) in January to 25°C (77°F) in July. Horiult has a long history dating back to the 13th century when it was a center of Buddhism and the site of a large monastery. Today, the town is home to a number of historical and cultural sites, including the ruins of the monastery and the Bogd Uul National Park.
