Barbiano (Barbian in German) is a municipality in the autonomous province of South Tyrol in northern Italy. It is located at 46°36′12″N 11°31′17″E and has a population of 1,690 (as of 2011). The municipality covers an area of 24.2 square kilometers and has a population density of 70 inhabitants per square kilometer. The climate is temperate with an average temperature of 11.5 degrees Celsius and an average precipitation of 850 millimeters per year. The municipality was first mentioned in a document in 1185 and was part of the County of Tyrol until 1919, when it became part of Italy. The municipality is home to a number of historical and cultural landmarks, including the Church of St. George, the Castle of Schwanburg, and the Barbiano Museum.
