Gunja, a village in Vukovarsko-Srijemska County, Croatia, is situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, 10 kilometers northeast of Vukovar. The village has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and cold, wet winters. Gunja's history dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. In the 16th century, the village was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, and it remained under Ottoman rule for over 150 years. After the Ottoman Empire was defeated in the 17th century, Gunja became part of the Habsburg Empire. In the 19th century, the village was a major center of Serbian culture and education. During the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s, Gunja was heavily damaged, but it has since been rebuilt. Today, Gunja is a peaceful village with a population of around 1,000 people.
