With a Mediterranean climate characterized by mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers, the town has a rich history dating back to ancient times, when it was known as Naupactus. It has been ruled by various empires throughout its history, including the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires, and was the site of the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, a major naval victory for the Holy League against the Ottoman Empire.
