It is situated on the banks of the Eure river, about 15 kilometers southwest of Chartres. The town has a temperate oceanic climate, with mild winters and warm summers. Maintenon has a rich history, dating back to the 11th century, when it was first mentioned in a charter. The town was once the seat of the seigneury of Maintenon, and it was later acquired by the Marquise de Maintenon, the second wife of King Louis XIV. The town is home to several historical monuments, including the Château de Maintenon, a 17th-century castle that was once the residence of the Marquise de Maintenon.
