The history of Campillo de Llerena dates back to the Roman period, when it was known as "Castrum Leporis". The municipality was conquered by the Moors in the 8th century and remained under their control until the 13th century, when it was reconquered by the Christians. Campillo de Llerena was granted the status of a municipality in 1342. The municipality's heritage includes the Church of San Juan Bautista, which was built in the 16th century, and the Convent of San Francisco, which was built in the 17th century.
