Hermannsburg is a municipality in the district of Celle, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is located in the Lüneburg Heath, about 20 km (12 mi) north of Celle. The average temperature in Hermannsburg is 8.5 °C (47.3 °F), and the average annual precipitation is 665 mm (26.2 in). Hermannsburg was first mentioned in a document in 1229. The town was founded by Bishop Hermann of Verden, who built a castle there. Hermannsburg was a member of the Hanseatic League from 1371 to 1518. The town was destroyed by fire in 1692, but was rebuilt. Hermannsburg is home to the Hermannsburg Mission, which was founded in 1849. The mission has sent missionaries to all over the world.
