Mechelroda is a municipality in the district of Weimarer Land, in Thuringia, Germany. It is situated approximately 10 km northeast of Weimar, and 15 km southwest of Jena. The municipality consists of the villages of Mechelroda, Berka, Buchfart, Eckolstädt, Klettbach, Niederzimmern, Obernissa, Ottstedt, Umpferstedt, Vippachedelhausen, and Wiegendorf. The average temperature in Mechelroda is 9°C | 48°F, with an average rainfall of 680 mm | 26.77 inches per year. Mechelroda was first mentioned in a document in 1254. The village was part of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach from 1640 to 1918. After the German Revolution of 1918, Mechelroda became part of the Weimar Republic. The village was occupied by the Soviet Army from 1945 to 1949. After the reunification of Germany in 1990, Mechelroda became part of the state of Thuringia.
