Uelsen is a municipality in the district of Grafschaft Bentheim, Lower Saxony, Germany. It is located near the Dutch border, at the southern edge of the Hümmling nature park. The climate is temperate, with average temperatures ranging from 0°C in January to 18°C in July. The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, and was first mentioned in 1022 as "Ulishusen". In the 14th century, Uelsen became part of the County of Bentheim, and in 1815 it became part of the Kingdom of Hanover. In 1866, Hanover was annexed by Prussia, and Uelsen became part of the German Empire. After World War II, Uelsen became part of the Federal Republic of Germany.
